At Redfern Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine, lower back and neck pain are the more common injuries that we treat. Neck and back pain is one of the most common complaints in modern society and one of the biggest causes of absenteeism and disability in our society. Unfortunately, many still do not understand how to manage this condition and the role that a physiotherapist can play to help treat and resolve your symptoms.

Our physiotherapists are highly trained in manual therapy skills and developing comprehensive exercise rehabilitation programs.  We will assess your condition to determine the best course of action to reduce your pain and disability.  This may include advice such as postural adjustments and modifications to your daily activities, which may be aggravating your symptoms.

Lower back and neck injuries are classified as acute or chronic.

Acute back pain usually comes on suddenly and generally lasts a few days or weeks. It is often mechanical in nature and caused by some form of trauma (lifting a heavy object, a fall, sports injury or prolonged activities such as gardening).  Neck injuries can occur from motor vehicle accidents resulting in whiplash, or from poor sleeping positions.

Chronic spinal injuries are generally longer than 3 months in duration and can sometimes involve degenerative aspects such as arthritis or disc degeneration and bulging. These injuries can often come on gradually or can be due to an acute injury that was poorly managed, meaning the cause and symptoms have never completely resolved. Early, accurate diagnosis and management are essential.
